Good Cents Guy May Review

June 5, 2017

May is over and what a crazy fun month it was...

My wife and I spent most of the month traveling throughout Europe and it marked the first full month of Good Cents Guy! We managed to push out 14 blog posts and add several new pages to the site. It's hard to believe now that I'm writing it all out.

It's been really fun sharing our insights regarding travel, personal finance and lifestyle with you all. In case you missed it, we'e covered the following topics:

It was a slow month for credit cards for us. I typically space out our applications 2-3 months out at a time, barring any irresistible offers! In April, I picked up the Citi AA Business Platinum Select and the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature.

Bank Bonuses:

  • BMO Harris

    • $200 bonus

Credit Cards Opened:

  • None

Cards Closed:

  • American Express Mercedes Benz Platinum

    • This card has a massive annual fee and the card wasn’t really giving us any additional benefits that other cards weren’t. I called Amex to see if they would offer me anything to keep the card, but nothing was offered at that time and I closed the card.

Point Bonuses

  • 1,000 Bonus Points from United Shopping Portal

Future Goals: I’m really happy about my point collection at this point, but keep in mind I've been collecting points since early 2015! Our plan is to head back to Europe next May and Southwest Asia later in 2018. We’ll sprinkle in some small getaways throughout the year to keep us busy, but those 2 trips are our next big ones.

Here's how we'll use points to get there:

Europe: I’ll use a combination of Lifemiles, United Miles and Ultimate Rewards (transferred to United). We’re going to try to fly business class both ways this time! Air Canada appears to have “some availability” in business class flying out of San Diego --> Toronto--> Copenhagen. We’ll try to book these as soon as they open up, which is typically 11 months in advance for most programs. Here’s how much each program charges to fly to Europe from USA (one-way):

United: 30,000 points in coach and 70,000 points in business class (57,500 points if you fly on United’s own product). You can find United's Award Chart Here

Lifemiles: 30,000 points in coach and 63,000 points in business. You can find the Lifemiles Award Chart here.

Southeast Asia: I’m currently sitting on a nice stack of AA miles, and I keep reading that they are becoming more and more difficult to actually use, so the plan is use them for a trip to Southeast Asia on Cathay Pacific or Japan Airlines. Both are known for having an amazing first and business class product, so we’re really excited to try it out! Here’s how much AA charges to fly to South East Asia, AA classifies this as Asia Region 2, from USA (one-way).

AAdvantage: 37,500 points in coach and 70,000 points in business class. You can find AA’s award chart here.

What’s next:

On the card front, we’ll apply for the Chase Ink Preferred in the next couple weeks. I don’t see the 80,000 point bonus going any higher any and Ultimate Rewards points are really versatile.

For the blog, we’ll see where it goes! Since we’ve been on the road so much the blog has lent itself more towards travel, but I’ll get more into some personal finance tips as I find time. I’d love to hear your feedback on where you want the blog to go next. Please send me an email or drop a comment and I’ll get back to you!
